March 2017 Update

The Power of Encouragement

On August 12, 1896, Henry Ford sat at a private banquet at the Oriental Hotel in New York City. All the leaders in the American electrical industry were present, and the guest of honor was Henry Ford's idol, Thomas Edison.

Only two months before, Henry Ford had tested his new invention for a motorized car, a vehicle he called the Quadricycle.

During a lull in the dinner conversation, the talk turned to electric cars and the problem with storage batteries. One of the men pointed out that a young inventor named Henry Ford had just built a gasoline engine car.

Ford was asked to move up near Thomas Edison, and the old inventor peppered Ford with questions. Edison asked Ford details, and with pencil in hand, Ford sketched out everything on the back of a menu.

When he had finished, Thomas Edison brought his fist down on the table with a bang and said: "Young man, that's the thing; you have it. Keep at it!"

Up to that point, many of Henry Ford’s professional acquaintances had only scoffed at his project. They had insisted that he was wasting his time.

Henry Ford went on to say: "That bang on the table was worth worlds to me. No man up to then had given me any encouragement. I had hoped I was right, sometimes I knew I was, sometimes I only wondered if I was, but here…out of a clear sky the greatest inventive genius in the world had given me a complete approval." The old inventor had become a crucial element in the makeup of the young man who would revolutionize the transportation industry. (Watts, Steven. The People's Tycoon. Alfred Knof Publ. 2005 p. 42-43)

Encouragement to do good, can go a long way. Hebrews 10:24

God Has a Plan

General Omar Bradley was the last of America's decorated 5 Star Generals. At the close of WWII, as he led American troops to victory over Hitler’s Germany, General Bradley had 1.3 million men directly under his command, the largest force ever to serve under a single U.S. field commander.

General Bradley is known for several famous remarks: "Leadership is intangible, therefore no weapon ever designed can replace it," & "We have solved the mystery of the atom, and forgotten the lessons of the Sermon on the Mount," & "Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death."

This last quote, Omar Bradley experienced in his first day of battle in WWII. On March 17, 1943, while serving as a deputy under General George Patton, Bradley’s jeep drove over a land mine. No one knows why the wheel of his jeep failed to explode the Italian made device. Before Omar Bradley ever became famous, he had nearly died. In his own words, General Bradley later acknowledged: "I was unnerved by this close call and it required considerable effort not to show it. Later, on reflection, I concluded that God must have spared me for more important duties." (Bradley, Omar. A General's Life. New York: Simon and Schuster. 1983. p. 142)

Dr. Jerry Chaney Graduated to Heaven

Years ago I heard Dr. Chaney preach from the text, Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. During that message, Dr. Chaney made this statement that I penned in my Bible: "I am going to live as long as I can, and then die when I can’t help it." On February 10, 2017, Dr. Jerry Chaney’s "can’t help it" day arrived. He was 73 years old.

Dr. Chaney was an author, founding pastor, and for the remaining years of his life, he with his wife Sue, traveled in evangelism. With almost thirty years in evangelism, he blessed many churches with the message of God’s Word, and souls were saved.

Brother Chaney had been a personal friend since introduced in 1980, and he served on the Board of Directors of Heritage for over three decades.

The funeral service for Dr. Chaney was fittingly held in the country church in southern Ohio where he was saved and called to preach as a boy. Dr. Chaney started preaching at 16 years of age, and he never looked back. To God be the Glory!
